Remise de la médaille ‘Young investigator award’ le jeudi 10 juillet

Charlène Esmieu, Chercheuse CNRS au LCC depuis 2019 et Nuria Romero Fernandez, Maître de Conférences (UT, LCC) depuis 2022 ont été distinguées par le Young Investigator Award de l’Institut de Chimie de Toulouse.

Charlène Esmieu mène ses recherches au sein de l’équipe de Christelle Hureau « Alzheimer, Amyloids and BioInorganic Chemistry » avec un focus sur de nouvelles approches thérapeutiques : “Syntheses and studies of fluorescent Cu(I)-targeting drugs in the Alzheimer’s disease context”.

Nuria Romero Fernandez, mène ses recherches au sein de l’équipe « Ingénierie des Nanoparticules Métalliques » dirigée par Karine Philippot avec pour thématique principale la scission de l’eau par voie électro- et photocatalytique pour la production d’hydrogène avec des nanoparticules métalliques.

Alain Igau « L’hydrogène, vers une réalité durable »

L’hydrogène est considéré comme une source d’énergie alternative prometteuse et décarbonée. Son exploitation pourrait permettre de relever les défis de la transition énergétique. Cependant, ce gaz est plus facilement transportable sous forme liquide dans nos installations actuelles. Il faut donc le transformer et cette problématique questionne encore les chimistes. Dans cet épisode de « Qu’est-ce que tu cherches ? », Alain Igau (équipe « ingénierie des nanoparticules métalliques » du LCC) nous dévoile comment la recherche œuvre pour une chimie plus durable, notamment grâce au procédé de catalyse. Dans son laboratoire, il élabore des catalyseurs innovants utilisables pour le stockage et le relargage de l’hydrogène.

Influence of Capping Ligands on Metal-Nanoparticle-Driven Hydrogen Evolution and CO2 Reduction Reactions

ABSTRACT
This chapter looks into the influence of the functionalization of the surface of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) with ligands on their catalytic performance in two crucial reactions, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). The birth of the surface functionalization of MNPs with ligands was greatly inspired by the advanced knowledge accumulated on molecular metal catalysts, whose physical and chemical properties can be tuned by coordinating appropriate ligands to the metal active center. This field of research has profited from the progress in the synthetic methods for the generation of MNPs and the evolution of the spectroscopic and analytical techniques for their exhaustive characterization, as well as the improvement of the computational techniques. Relevant examples will illustrate how the functionalization of the surface of MNPs allow to modulate the energy profile of catalytic intermediate species through electronic effects and regulate the product selectivity through hydrophobic/hydrophilic effects. Another key parameter is the tuning of the number of surface-active sites as a function of the metal to ligand ratio and the chemical nature of the coordinating ligand. Furthermore, in some peculiar cases, second coordination sphere effects have even been described in analogy to biological enzymes.

Design of ruthenium nanoparticles for better performance in catalysis

ABSTRACT
This chapter focus on recent advances in the design of ruthenium-based nanoparticles using organometallic complexes as the metal source, for their application in catalysis. The aim is to illustrate the advantages of the organometallic approach to achieve nanoparticles with controlled characteristics. The adjustment of the morphology (size, shape, crystalline structure) and of the surface state of metal nanoparticles, are key parameters for the tuning of their catalytic properties. Study and rationalize the effects of these parameters provides interesting perspectives to improve the performance of nanocatalysts. At the laboratory scale, the accurate design of metal nanoparticles is feasible by an adequate choice of the reaction conditions including the nature of the metal precursor (organometallic complex with appropriate kinetics of decomposition), the nature of the stabilizer (polymers, dendrimers, ligands, ionic liquids, etc.), the addition of a second metal for a synergy effect or the use of a support that will bring other properties (stability, conductivity, electronic effects by phosphorus- or nitrogen doping, confinement effect). The challenge is to find the best compromise to achieve robust metal nanoparticles with high catalytic performance, both in terms of activity and selectivity. This will be illustrated through recent examples of ruthenium nanoparticles implemented in catalytic reactions that can find applications in fine chemistry and energy. The complementarity between computational and experimental chemistries, when available, will be underlined, being a powerful way to precisely understand the catalytic properties of nanoparticles and then, improve performance.

ABSTRACT
The performance of Ru-based nanoparticles (NPs) in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) relies on both their structural properties and the oxidation state of the metal. Herein, the versatility of the organometallic approach for the synthesis of metal-based nanostructures is combined with thermal oxidation treatments to prepare carbon-nanotube (CNT)-supported Ru-containing nanomaterials for their use as electrocatalysts after dropcasting onto a glassy carbon rotating disk electrode. This strategy allowed access to a series of hybrid nanomaterials of different Ru/RuO₂ compositions and different structural order. Linear sweep voltammetry experiments show that the relative disposition of the Ru/RuO₂ phases, their interconversion under reductive turnover conditions and the degree of structural order affect the HER electrocatalytic performance of different materials. The electrode containing NPs consisting of a RuO₂ core and metallic Ru at the surface outperforms that containing either pure RuO₂ NPs or Ru NPs. Impedance spectroscopy studies and DFT calculations suggest that this catalytic activity enhancement arises from improved charge transport properties and from the structure of the exposed metallic Ru shell, which is partially oxidized and highly amorphous.

In situ study of the evolution of NiFe nanocatalysts in reductive and oxidative environments upon thermal treatments

La conversion de la biomasse en tant que voie durable pour accéder à des produits chimiques et des carburants de valeur est très attrayante pour l’industrie chimique, mais les conversions catalytiques reposent encore souvent sur l’utilisation de métaux nobles. Les contraintes de durabilité imposent de développer des catalyseurs alternatifs à partir de métaux abondants et peu coûteux. Dans ce contexte, les nanoparticules de NiFe sont des candidats intéressants. Sous leur forme réduite et supportée, ils ont été signalés comme étant plus actifs et sélectifs que le Ni monométallique dans l’hydrogénation des fonctions polaires des molécules organiques, et les deux métaux sont très abondants. Cependant, contrairement aux métaux nobles, Ni et Fe sont facilement oxydés dans des conditions ambiantes, et la compréhension de leur transformation dans les atmosphères oxydantes et réductrices est une question importante bien que rarement étudiée avant leur application en catalyse. Trois types de nanoparticules de NiFe ont été préparés par une approche organométallique pour assurer la formation de nanoparticules ultra petites (<3,5 nm) avec une distribution de taille étroite, une composition et un ordre chimique contrôlés, tout en travaillant dans des conditions douces : Ni2Fe1 et Ni1Fe1, tous deux riches en Ni noyau et surface riche en Fe, et un alliage de composition Ni1Fe9. Les systèmes supportés ont été obtenus par imprégnation de silice avec une solution colloïdale des nanoparticules préformées. Utilisant des techniques de caractérisation avancées, telles que la diffusion des rayons X aux grands angles (WAXS) et la spectroscopie d’absorption des rayons X (XAS) en conditions in situ, cette étude rend compte de l’évolution de l’ordre chimique et de l’état d’oxydation des métaux lors d’exposition à l’air, à l’hydrogène et/ou à l’augmentation de la température, autant de facteurs pouvant affecter leur degré de réduction et leurs performances ultérieures en catalyse. Nous montrons que si l’oxydation se produit facilement lors de l’exposition à l’air, les métaux peuvent revenir à leur état initial lors du chauffage en présence de H2 mais avec un changement de structure et d’ordre chimique.
