<h3>Ultradispersed Metal Catalysts for C1 Chemistry: Linking Structure and Reactivity<em></em></h3>
<p>The development of efficient and sustainable catalysts requires understanding how their structure evolves from synthesis to operating conditions. This presentation explores different strategies to control the dispersion of supported metals, from isolated atoms and clusters to nanoparticles.</p>
<p>However, the catalyst designed during synthesis is not necessarily the one operating under reaction conditions. <em>In situ</em> characterization is used to investigate structural transformations and the migration of metal species across different length scales. These changes are then related to catalytic performance in several C1 reactions, including the water-gas shift reaction, CO<sub>2</sub> methanation, and methane decomposition.</p>
<p>Future work will build on this approach by combining the control of metal dispersion, the study of catalyst dynamics under operating conditions, and active-site identification. The objective is to strengthen the link between catalyst design, characterization, and catalytic performance, thereby supporting the development and optimization of new catalytic systems for C1 chemistry.</p></div>

<h3><strong>Confined single metal atoms on solid catalysts. Establishing bridges between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis</strong></h3>
<p>The preparation of single metal (Pt, Rh, Ir, Pd) atoms confined in porous materials allows to stabilize metal valences that are usually not stable under reaction conditions. This, together with the control of the coordination groups associated to the catalytic site within the pores and cavities, allow the preparation of active, stable and regioselective solid catalysts.</p>
<p>We will show that in some cases their activity and regioselectivity can surpass those of the classical homogeneous catalysts.</p></div>

<h3><strong>Developing New Photosensitizers based on Transition Metal Ions </strong><strong>for Green Energy Applications</strong></h3>
<p>Rising global population and increased CO<sub>2</sub> levels in the atmosphere have focused attention on developing alternative and widely available carbon-free energy sources.<sup>1,2</sup> Our research focuses on harnessing the unique properties of excited states in metal complexes to drive self-assembly processes and develop innovative energy applications. By leveraging the photophysical and photochemical behaviors of these complexes, we explore how light-induced excitations can be utilized to control molecular organization and energy transfer at the nanoscale. The parallels with Natural Photosynthesis are evident: light energy is captured by self-assembled Light Harvesting Complexes and is channeled to a reaction centre which induces electron transfer and the eventual production of chemical energy.<sup>3</sup></p>
<p>Our approach involves the synthesis of polypyridyl-based metal complexes, which are known for their stability and tunable electronic properties. By manipulating the excited states of these complexes, we demonstrate how light can act as a stimulus to induce self-assembly (Figure 1), leading to the formation of well-defined nanostructures with potential applications in catalysis, sensing, and optoelectronics.<sup>4</sup> Additionally, we extend our approach to the development of photoactive molecular devices capable of storing and transferring electrons, offering insights into the design of next-generation photosensitizers for chemical energy production.<sup>5</sup> We have also moved from second- and third-row transition metal ions to the first row, and explore energy applications of these abundant, inexpensive and relatively non-toxic metal ions.<sup>6</sup></p>
