				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p>In their Research Article, Lionel Salmon, Azzedine Bousseksou, and co-workers report the implementation of spin crossover composite filaments for the rational design of 4D-printed mechanical metamaterials. The obtained bi-material structures guided by a theoretical analysis based on analytical calculations and finite element analysis simulations exhibit giant programmable positive or negative deformation with coefficients of thermal expansion up to 14000 ppm/°C.</p>
<p>In the past decade, 3D-printed cellular materials have witnessed an impressive advancement affording a wealth of remarkable mechanical properties, such as negative Poisson’s ratio, negative compressibility, and negative coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). Recent efforts in this field have been increasingly considered 4D-printed metastructures, which leverage shape-morphing properties of stimuli-responsive materials. Here, we introduce a new class of 4D-printed metamaterials based on bistable spin crossover (SCO) molecular materials. These systems synergistically couple dissimilar materials at different size scales to harness mismatched thermomechanical properties—specifically differential thermal expansion and stiffness—to generate large directional deformations upon heating or cooling. Through a combination of theoretical modeling and experimental validation, we demonstrate that our SCO-based 4D-printed structures can achieve programmable motions, including positive and negative expansion. The associated CTE reaches peak values of ca. +14400 and −11400 ppm/◦C, respectively, more than 10 times greater than those reported in the literature for 3D-printed analogues. This work establishes a versatile and generalizable conceptual strategy for engineering multilevel, hierarchical architectures with programmable functionalities, advancing the design of energy-efficient soft actuators and reconfigurable/adaptive material systems.</p>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner">Hofmann-type clathrates constitute one of the most versatile families of coordination frameworks displaying spin-crossover (SCO) behaviour, offering unparalleled opportunities for tuning bistability from bulk materials to nanoparticles and thin films. Over the past two decades, significant advances in synthetic methodologies have been achieved, particularly through the use of tetra- and di-cyanometallate building blocks ([M<sup>II</sup>(CN)4]<sup>2 –</sup>, [MI(CN)2]<sup>–</sup>) combined with mono- or bidentate bridging organic ligands. These strategies have enabled the construction of structurally diverse FeII-based frameworks exhibiting cooperative and often abrupt spin transitions. This review highlights recent progress in bulk synthesis, structural engineering, and property modulation in Hofmann-type SCO complexes. It emphasizes how dimensionality, ligand design, and metal-metal connectivity govern transition temperatures, hysteresis, and multistep behavior. In this bulk regime, particular attention is devoted to the interplay between spin transition and electron transfer in mixed-valence or redox-active clathrates, which emerges as a powerful handle to encode and expand multifunctional responses. A considerable research effort has also focused on downsizing these materials into nanoparticles while maintaining, or even enhancing, cooperativity. This approach unlocks new prospects for solution processability, surface functionalization, and device integration.Parallel advances in host-guest chemistry demonstrate that these flexible frameworks can encapsulate neutral or charged species, leading to pronounced modulation of SCO behavior, guest-triggered phase transitions, and stimuli-responsive properties. Particular attention is devoted to 2D and 3D host-guest systems and to the emergence of “active” guest molecules capable of mechanical, electronic, or photonic coupling with the SCO matrix. Moreover, advances in the fabrication of thin films, micro-structured architectures, and nanostructured surfaces are increasingly positioning Hofmann-type clathrates at the forefront of applications in molecular electronics, memory devices, spintronics, sensing, and photo-switching. Yet, despite their remarkable functional potential, their practical implementation in devices remains limited. This is likely owing to their intrinsic fragility and the challenges associated with their manipulation, processing, and integration into innovative device architectures. Additional efforts are therefore required, particularly in the development of advanced nanotechnologies, to ultimately translate these materials into genuine societal applications. This review provides a comprehensive account of the field, underscoring key structure-property relationships across multiple length scales. <p>Lanthanides play a crucial role in modern medicine and technology as well as in the metabolism of methylotrophic bacteria. In this context, the research on lanthanide-binding peptides and proteins is an active and rapidly developing field. This comprehensive and critical review focuses on the structural, thermodynamic (affinity and selectivity) and kinetic parameters governing the interaction of Ln<small><sup>3+</sup></small> ions with different peptides and proteins, including both naturally occurring and <em>de novo</em>-designed scaffolds. It thus provides guidelines and future directions for the rational design of Ln-binding peptides and proteins with suitable features for the main applications explored to date, including luminescent sensing, magnetic resonance imaging, Ln separation and recovery and Ln-based (photo)-catalysis.</p>

<p>Ball milling experiments were conducted on spin crossover (SCO) powder and SCO@polyurethane composite samples. The study reveals that the presence of the TPU matrix acts as a shield for the SCO particles upon grinding, precluding their deactivation. This result is encouraging for the integration of SCO materials into devices.</p>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p style="text-align: left;">Unlike lanthanide ions, 1<sup>st</sup>-order spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is cancelled by the ligand field for transition metal ions, and achieving high magnetic anisotropy is generally considered the Holy Grail for these ions. Results obtained with Fe(II) show that a contribution from first-order SOC coupling is not confined to low-coordination number complexes but can be implemented in a pentagonal bipyramid complexes (figure) by proper chemical design. This is confirmed by theoretical calculations and experimental magnetic behaviors consistent with the existence of large magnetic anisotropy, most salient feature being the SMM behaviors with large energy barriers for magnetization reversal. The observation of such a behavior without an applied static magnetic field is quite unique for a mononuclear 3d complex.</p></div>

<p>Researchers from &#8220;Laboratoire de chimie de coordination (LCC Toulouse)&#8221; and &#8220;<span class="accordion-tabbed__tab-mobile accordion__closed">Laboratoire de chimie des matériaux moléculaires</span> (UNISTRA Strasbourg)&#8221; have designed molecular shuttles and are able to control their movement. These molecular machines use a ring-shaped molecule, called pillar[5]arene, which can glide along an axis made up of two distinct stations.</p>
<p>What makes these shuttles unique is that they respond to their environment:</p>
<ul>
<li>In an acidic environment (low pH), the ring can freely glide along the entire length of the rail.</li>
<li>In a neutral environment, such molecular motions are limited over the decyl station.</li>
</ul>
<p>The ring can also be blocked on a specific part of the rail (the decyl station) by modifying the protonated molecule using electrochemical oxidation.<br />This system demonstrates that it is possible to precisely control the motion of molecular components, opening new possibilities in nanotechnology and smart materials.</p>

<p>In response to the global health crisis posed by antimicrobial resistance, Michel Baltas (Team R, LCC – Molecules and Composites for Optics) and his collaborators have synthesized a new molecule named <em data-start="362" data-end="372">infuzide</em>. This compound has demonstrated efficacy against resistant strains of gram-positive pathogens, notably <em data-start="476" data-end="499">Staphylococcus aureus</em> and <em data-start="504" data-end="518">Enterococcus</em>, in both laboratory and animal model tests. <em data-start="563" data-end="573">Infuzide</em> outperformed certain standard antibiotics, marking a significant step forward in the search for new treatments against infections resistant to conventional antibiotics.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">ABSTRACT<br /><span>This chapter looks into the influence of the functionalization of the surface of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) with ligands on their catalytic performance in two crucial reactions, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). The birth of the surface functionalization of MNPs with ligands was greatly inspired by the advanced knowledge accumulated on molecular metal catalysts, whose physical and chemical properties can be tuned by coordinating appropriate ligands to the metal active center. This field of research has profited from the progress in the synthetic methods for the generation of MNPs and the evolution of the spectroscopic and analytical techniques for their exhaustive characterization, as well as the improvement of the computational techniques. Relevant examples will illustrate how the functionalization of the surface of MNPs allow to modulate the energy profile of catalytic intermediate species through electronic effects and regulate the product selectivity through hydrophobic/hydrophilic effects. Another key parameter is the tuning of the number of surface-active sites as a function of the metal to ligand ratio and the chemical nature of the coordinating ligand. Furthermore, in some peculiar cases, second coordination sphere effects have even been described in analogy to biological enzymes.<br /></span></p>
