Lanthanides play a crucial role in modern medicine and technology as well as in the metabolism of methylotrophic bacteria. In this context, the research on lanthanide-binding peptides and proteins is an active and rapidly developing field. This comprehensive and critical review focuses on the structural, thermodynamic (affinity and selectivity) and kinetic parameters governing the interaction of Ln3+ ions with different peptides and proteins, including both naturally occurring and de novo-designed scaffolds. It thus provides guidelines and future directions for the rational design of Ln-binding peptides and proteins with suitable features for the main applications explored to date, including luminescent sensing, magnetic resonance imaging, Ln separation and recovery and Ln-based (photo)-catalysis.

Federation Gay Lussac-Academy of Sciences Prize for Chemistry at the Heart of Societal Challenges

The prize is awarded to Christelle HUREAU-SABATER, Research Director at CNRS in the Laboratoire de chimie de coordination (LCC – CNRS/) and Clotilde POLICAR, Professor at the Laboratoire des biomolécules (CNRS/ENS-PSL/Sorbonne Université) of the chemistry department at École Normale Supérieure-PSL.

La cérémonie de remise des prix de l’Académie des sciences a eu lieu le 18 octobre 2022 sous la coupole de l’Institut de France à Paris.

Passionate about the role of metal cations in living systems, Christelle Hureau-Sabater has made significant contributions to bioinorganic chemistry related to amyloid pathologies. She has demonstrated the importance of copper and zinc ions in oxidative stress processes and peptide self-assembly associated with Alzheimer’s disease. She is also involved in the development of therapeutic approaches such as copper-chelating agents and modulation of amyloid formation.

Both laureates enthusiastically share their scientific knowledge through various activities, including public lectures, science theater, and hands-on experiments for young audiences. They are actively engaged in national and international responsibilities, particularly in the associations of their respective disciplines, such as FrenchBIC and SBIC.
