NucleoLipids (NL) are bioinspired amphiphilic molecules composed of a hydrophilic nucleotide or oligonucleotide moiety and a hydrophobic phospholipid or derivative.(1) Their amphiphilicity drives the self-assembly into SupraMolecular Edifices (SME), which can cross membranes,(2) including the blood-brain barrier.(3) The nitrogen-containing nucleobases of NL can coordinate metal ions, leading to structural modifications of the resulting SME.(4)
In this talk, I will highlight the versatile potential of NL and their SME in health-related applications. These structures can function as nanocarriers for drug delivery,(5,6) stimuli-responsive materials for controlled release,(7) and tunable scaffolds for 3D cell culture.(8,9) Special emphasis will be placed on their interactions with metal ions.
