“Power-to-X”
Catalytic Conversion of Renewable Energy and Carbon Sources for Sustainable Fuels and Chemicals
World-wide deployment of technologies to generate „de-carbonized“ electricity (power) enables new production pathways to „de-fossilized“ fuels and chemicals (X). Hydrogen can serve as the molecular pivot at a sustainable energy-chemistry nexus through catalytic conversion of non-fossil carbon resources such as CO2, biomass, or recycled plastic [1]. The present lecture will discuss challenges and opportunities arising from this transition for catalysis research using the concept of Green Chemistry to progress from “sustainable chemistry” to “chemistry for sustainability”. This includes novel pathways to advanced fuels [2], predictive catalyst design for CO2 conversion [3], and the development of adaptive catalytic systems [4].
