A two-way road driving advances in bioinorganic chemistry: contributions from investigations of small to large molecules.

Our lab has been focused on the design of metal-based molecules with potential biological activities, including anti-tuberculosis, antihypertensive, and anti-cancer, among others. During the last years, we explored a concept of prodrug metal-mediated oxidation activation moving toward a ROS-based light-triggered strategy. Some of these systems have been shown to have the capacity to bind selectively to non-canonical DNA structures, in particular G-quadruplex, enabling us to carry out more detailed in vitro studies. In addition to this, we have also studied heme-based gas-sensor proteins from Mycobacterium tuberculosis and, more recently, a human protein associated with neurological disorders.
