Stéphanie Bastin was born in 1974 in Valenciennes, France. She completed her PhD in chemistry from 1997 to 2000 under the supervision of Prof. Jacques Brocard at the University of Science and Technology of Lille I, where she worked on the synthesis of chiral ferrocenyl amino alcohols for applications in catalysis. She then held a one-year position as a temporary teaching and research assistant in the same group.
In 2001, she joined Prof. Martin Wills’ group at the University of Warwick (UK), where she developed chiral supported catalysts and investigated their catalytic activity in the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of ketones.
In 2003, she took up a postdoctoral position in Dr Jean-Pierre Majoral’s group at the Laboratoire de Chimie de Coordination in Toulouse. In 2004, she joined the CNRS as a permanent researcher in the same laboratory.
Her current research focuses on the development of novel functionalized (chiral) N-heterocyclic carbenes for applications in catalysis.
Fields of expertise – current projects
The current projects are organized around two main research areas. The first focuses on the development of N-heterocyclic carbene ligands of the imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-3-ylidene type for gold catalysis, with applications in fine chemistry. This research is carried out in collaboration with Dr Vincent César.
The second research area concerns the development of manganese catalysts for applications of societal relevance, such as plastic recycling through reductive depolymerization reactions and hydrogen storage in the form of liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs). This research is being developed in collaboration with Prof. Jean-Baptiste Sortais.
