Identifying Platforms for Selective Catalysis

Stereoselective catalysis uniquely offers the possibility to increase molecular complexity rapidly from simple (prochiral) starting materials. Efficient synthesis of small-molecule chiral building blocks can be achieved with high levels of stereocontrol starting from a common substrate (i.e. a platform) that can be readily diversified into an array of three-dimensional products using the proper set of catalyst, reagents and reaction conditions. The boundaries of this approach can be pushed farther with the use of stereochemically dynamic supramolecular structures as starting point. Both strategies will be addressed in this lecture.
