A journey in the realm of polyoxometalates: electron transfer processes

Polyoxometalates (POMs) form a versatile family of molecular nano-oxides of the early transition metals endowed with remarkable redox properties, which pave the way to numerous applications in energy related and electronic devices. These applications rely on controlled electron transfer processes, which are governed not only by the thermodynamics but also by environmental and charge compensation effects. I will discuss some recent examples underlying key parameters driving the photo-reduction of POMs and charge photo-accumulation in POM-bodipy dyads, in the context of artificial photosynthesis.[1-2] I will also present how we explore the translation of POM multifunctionality in solid-state molecular junctions towards nanoelectronics.[3,4]
