Our research program encompasses organic (di)radicals for photophysics, carbenes, the coordination chemistry of mostly late transition metal complexes, and formally multiply bonded metal complexes for bond activation and functional group transfer. We thereby emphasize a scientific approach that integrates computational predictions and advanced spectroscopy with synthesis and potential applications such as catalysis.
In this lecture, I will present our work on gold[1] and palladium terminal imido/phosphinidene[2,3] complexes and a lead[4] carbyne. These compounds profit from the population of antibonding molecular orbitals (“Beyond-the-Oxo-Wall”), which leads to umpolung to afford electrophilic nitrenes and triplet carbenes for RN/RC functional group transfer. As a sidenote, I will thereby introduce Metal-Lewis-Base Activation of organic carbonyls.[5] Further, I will present on the oxidation of triphenylphosphine,[6] affording a powerful reagent for the activation of strong bonds and small molecules.[7]
