Specifically functionalized carboranes (bearing NH2 and OH groups) were synthesized to be grafted onto dendrimers, but steric hindrance prevents full substitution even of the hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene core, as illustrated by birds crowned by a carborane competing for access to food. The beaks are red (oxygen atoms), signifying the strongly nucleophilic OH. The feet are dark red (phosphorus atoms), which they could potentially use to complex a few metals after they have finished eating. More information can be found in the Research Article by A.-M. Caminade, E. Hey-Hawkins and co-workers (DOI: 10.1002/chem.202303867). Artwork by Dr. Chistoph Selg.

Produced as part of the CCIMC project, in collaboration with teams in Leipzig and Barcelona.
