“Olefin metathesis – sustainable methodology for synthesis of valuable compounds”

Ruthenium-catalysed olefin metathesis is an attractive and powerful transformation for the formation of carbon-carbon double bonds. This methodology is now familiar to most organic chemists as numerous catalysts are available that enable a multitude of olefin metathesis reactions.

Currently, the main research directions in this field involve the use of olefin metathesis to convert raw materials of natural origin, such as vegetable or algae oils, into useful products like macrocyclic musk compounds or 9-decenoic acid, which are valuable materials in the perfume and cosmetics industry. In addition, there is an emphasis on replacing halogenated or petroleum-based solvents with their ‘green’ alternatives, such as dimethyl carbonate or 4-MeTHP.

During the lecture, I will highlight our key findings in these areas.
